President Bola Tinubu is reportedly considering a significant overhaul of his cabinet, which could involve scrapping the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. This is part of a broader initiative aimed at improving government efficiency by consolidating, dividing, or eliminating certain portfolios, according to a source within the Presidency.

In response to mounting pressure to remove underperforming ministers, Tinubu had previously cautioned his cabinet about inadequate performance. However, apart from the suspension of Dr. Betta Edu, the head of the Humanitarian Affairs Ministry, over allegations of financial mismanagement, few changes have been made. To ensure accountability, Tinubu established a Central Delivery Coordination Unit to monitor ministerial performance, signaling that those falling short of expectations may be replaced.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, founded in 2019 to handle social welfare and disaster management, may be disbanded as Tinubu believes its functions are already being carried out by other agencies, rendering the ministry unnecessary. The President’s cabinet reshuffle is expected to be finalized before his trip to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, with several ministries set to be restructured or dissolved.

As the reshuffle nears, reports indicate that ministers have begun seeking support from influential figures to retain their positions. Nonetheless, sources confirm that Tinubu’s decisions will prioritize the nation's best interests.
