This gesture comes after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu suspended Betta Edu as the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a holistic investigation on allegations of misappropriation of public funds.

Since Betta Edu's suspension, Betta Edu had maintained a low profile on all social media handles.

The misappropriation of public funds scandal, as reported by The Guardian, involves the approval of the transfer of ₦585,200,000 into the personal bank account of a civil servant.

The alleged civil servant is the project accountant in charge of grants for vulnerable Nigerians.

Leaked memo showed that Betta Edu requested the transfer of funds from the National Social Investment Office’s account to the personal bank account of Mrs Bridget Oniyelu, an accountant overseeing a federal government poverty intervention project under Betta Edu’s ministry.

According to Npower News, the minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Betta Edu, said the payment instructions followed due process, even though the accountant-general of the federation said she did not carry out the minister’s request because no bulk money “is supposed to be made to an individual’s account in the name of Project Accountant”.

Betta Edu the suspended Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation also approved the payment of flight fare for staff to Kogi, even though the north-central state has no airport.
