Northern Group Issues Warning to Tinubu Over Alleged Plan to Reinstate Betta Edu

 

A Northern group, Arewa Awareness on Good Governance, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resist any pressure to reinstate Betta Edu, the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, who was suspended over allegations of misconduct. The group warned that bringing Edu back into the cabinet would compromise Nigeria’s anti-corruption drive and erode public confidence in Tinubu’s administration.

The call came in response to an appeal for Edu’s reinstatement, reportedly made by Hon. Cecelia Ogbeche Odok, a senior legislative aide to the Speaker of the House of Representatives. 

Malam Grema Ibrahim Musa, the leader of the group, condemned the push for Edu's reinstatement, stating that it suggests placing her above the law, even though the allegations against her remain unresolved.

“The allegations against Betta Edu demand a thorough investigation, and her suspension is necessary to prevent interference. Ignoring these accusations would be a serious mistake,” the group stated.

The group criticized Hon. Odok’s appeal, arguing that it downplays the severity of the charges against Edu and threatens to undermine Tinubu’s anti-corruption agenda. They emphasized that Edu’s suspension is not politically motivated but a step toward ensuring justice and safeguarding Nigeria’s resources.

The group further questioned why Edu should be reinstated when another official, Halima Shehu, the National Coordinator of the National Social Investment Program, was not recalled following similar allegations of financial misconduct.

The group stressed the importance of due process in investigating the claims against Edu, highlighting the need for accountability and transparency in governance. According to them, the suspension of Edu reflects Tinubu’s dedication to fighting corruption and enforcing the rule of law.

They concluded by threatening nationwide protests and the picketing of government agencies in Northern Nigeria if President Tinubu gives in to pressure and reinstates Betta Edu as Minister.
